The Split
A tool almost anyone can use, and almost no one can build. Guess who sleeps the least.
You asked something of a machine today, or you will before the day is out. Directions. A rash you were afraid to name out loud. The sentence you couldn't finish. It answered in a second, in clean and confident prose, and you took what you needed and moved on. You were not the only one. On the single product that started all of this, roughly nine hundred million people reached for the same machine in the same week.
Now the part almost none of them could tell you. Who made it. Where it lives. How many human beings actually understand, at the frontier, how the thing does what it does. The answer to the last one is small enough to seat in a mid-sized theater. A few thousand people, in a handful of buildings, hold the working knowledge of the most powerful tool of your lifetime.1
How does a thing that everyone touches end up understood by almost no one?
Every powerful thing our species has built has drawn the same line. A few who understand it. A multitude who live inside what those few decided. The mill. The printing press. The reactor. What has changed is not the shape of the line but where it now falls, and who is left standing on the near side of it.
For a long stretch the deepest knowledge of a new science lived in universities, spread thin across the world, arguable, shared. That is over, at least for this one. In 2023, roughly six in ten of the year's notable AI models came out of private industry. One year later it was nine in ten. The frontier packed up and moved inside a small number of companies, and it took the future with it.2
If the door at the top were the only door closing, you could at least see the shape of the thing. But the door at the bottom is doing the opposite. It is blowing wide open.
Here is the strange mercy in all of it. At the exact moment the top of the pyramid seals shut, the base cracks open for anyone. A year and a half ago a researcher named Andrej Karpathy gave a name to a thing people had started doing: describing software in plain speech and letting the machine write it. Vibe coding, he called it, half as a joke. The joke did not stay a joke. By early 2025 one prominent startup accelerator reported that around a quarter of its newest companies were running on codebases the machine had written almost entirely, some ninety-five percent of the lines.
The bar to build an ordinary thing has never been lower. The bar to build the thing that builds the ordinary things has never been higher. Both are true at once, and the distance between them is the whole story.
So if almost anyone can now build, why do so few end up owning what they build?
Hold that, because it gets stranger inside the temple. The people at the very top are not exempt from their own machine. They are its heaviest users. On one of the earnings calls where the largest companies narrate themselves to their owners, the head of one of them said that more than thirty percent of its new code was now being written by AI, up from a quarter just six months before. The tool has started building the tool.
You would think that frees the builder. Fewer hours at the keyboard, more hours alive. Every machine ever sold made that promise. Do more, and work less.
So do they work less?
They work more. Not a little more. Constantly, compulsively, at the ragged edge of what a body can take. In a careful trial run in the summer of 2025, researchers handed experienced developers these tools and measured what actually happened. The developers came away certain they had worked about twenty percent faster. They had in fact worked nineteen percent slower. They could not feel the difference between acceleration and its opposite, and they wanted more of it.
The venture investor Marc Andreessen, on a podcast last spring, reached for the word other people had started using for coders like this. Vampires, as Andreessen described it. Working more than ever, awake when they should be asleep, because the opportunity cost of going to bed has become unbearable. Close your eyes, and for those hours you are no longer standing over your twenty tireless agents while they run.
The machine that was supposed to hand time back to the people who own it took theirs first. The owners of the future have the least of it left to spend.
If even the winners are not free, what exactly is anyone winning?
Below all of it, the rest of us are quietly sorting into two camps, and the ground in the middle is thinning under our feet. On one side, the people who have thrown themselves in without reservation. On the other, the people who have decided this thing is coming for what they love and mean to fight it to the last. When a research center asked Americans how they felt, only about 11 percent of the general public, roughly one in nine, said they were more excited than concerned. Among the experts who build the thing, it was 47 percent, nearly half. A gap of thirty-six percentage points between the people making it and the people living inside it.
You can watch the far pole harden into refusal. Novelists and newspapers in court. Artists suing over what was taken to train the machines. Two of the great creative unions on strike, calling it by its plainest name, an existential threat to their professions.3 Whatever the middle used to be, a place to hold the tool at arm's length and take it or leave it as the mood struck you, it is not holding. You are being handed a side you did not ask to choose. There is no comfortable middle.
And when the middle goes, where does a person stand?
They stand, more and more, alone. The old answer to that question was a rung. You started at the bottom of something already built, a firm, a craft, a career, and you climbed it. That first rung is being sawed off. At the largest technology companies, hiring of new graduates has fallen by roughly two-thirds against where it stood in 2019.
Nobody knows how far this goes, and the honest proof of that is watching the people who should know try to call it. In the spring of 2025 Dario Amodei, who runs one of the frontier labs, warned that the machine could erase half of all entry-level white-collar jobs. He said it again, harder, that winter. Then, by the following spring, he softened it into a gentler claim about productivity, a shift one business magazine flatly called a walk-back, while Sam Altman said he was delighted to have been wrong so far. These are the people with the most information on Earth about where this goes, and they cannot hold a single prediction steady across one year.
If the rung is gone and the forecast is fog, what door is left?
One. Build your own. Be the owner instead of the employee, since the employee's chair is being folded up and carried out of the room. And people are walking through that door in numbers we have not seen. In the first half of 2025, solo founders were more than a third of all new startups incorporated on one of the platforms that count them, up by half from where it sat in 2019. The most individual possible way to work. One person and their machines, against the world. Individuality, turned at last into a business plan.
The money almost never follows the crowd through that door. Those same solo founders took in under fifteen percent of the cash that went into funded rounds.4 The people who own the machines have promised this lone founder a country of geniuses in a datacenter, as Amodei once put it, and, in Altman's standing bet, a single person one day running a billion-dollar company. The promise is real. It is their conviction, sincerely held. And it has not arrived. Many walk in as the user. A very few walk out as the owner. The split is that old sentence, poured into concrete and stood up as a wall.
So here is where most of us actually land. On the near side of that wall, holding a tool of almost unimaginable power that we did not build and will never own. We are not going to hold the frontier. We are going to reach it the way we reach nearly everything now, by the hour and by the result, paying each time we touch it and owning none of it the moment we let go.
Which leaves the quiet question waiting on the other side of every locked door. If you can never own the thing, what does it cost to keep renting it, and what are you really renting, when the thing you rent begins to think?
